After installing Windows Service Pack 3 I kept getting the "Stop Device" message that said "this application will not run in this operating system".
In my case it turned out to be a Startup item called CZFMDxpk which was the application CZFMDxpk.exe (It was for a card reader: CITIZEN FDD + FMD Combo Reader FDD and was located here: C:"Program Files"FDD + FMD Combo Reader)
To discover which Startup item was responsible for the message I used the System Configuration Utility, that can be found by clicking on "Start" then "Run" and typing "msconfig" into the box and clicking on "OK".
Once the System Configuration Utility appears go to the tab labelled "Startup", chances are one of the Items listed here is causing the message. To discover which I disabled all of them, then enabled four and restarted the system, if there was no "Stop Device" message I knew these four were ok and moved on to the next four, if there was a message I knew it was one of these four and enabled/disabled them systematically to discover which it was.
Hope this helps,
